When providing couples therapy I utilize research based approaches which draw from the work and research of The Gottman Institute, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, and Contextual Couples Therapy. Each approach has its strengths and by combining these approaches I am able to help couples make the progress they desire.

Couples face tremendous stress and challenges in today’s world. Unfortunately, much of the couples therapy provided today fails.

This is because:

  • Most therapists and counselors are not trained in couples therapy.

  • One person within the couple comes to therapy already wanting a divorce but just wants to be able say “we gave therapy a try”

  • Each person within the couple thinks their partner needs to change but is not willing to take a hard look at themselves

For a relationship to change each individual needs to change

  • Egos are too fragile and someone within the couple cannot handle the challenge and confrontation which is needed to make rapid change

  • Therapy is too infrequent and the couple is not committed to the time and energy required to save their relationship

The following are signs of relationship breakdow

  • Criticism
  • Contempt i.e. sarcasm, name calling, eye rolling, mocking, sneering, & hostile humor (“I was just joking”)
  • Defensiveness
  • Stonewalling i.e. emotional shutdown
  • Lack of “emotional closeness” and a sense of feeling “connected”
